Part I
Paayiram:
The first four chapters come under the grouping of Introduction. Introduction to what? About what to come in
later chapters. Like a modern treatise dealing with a specific problem, the author gives a synopsis
of the ideas dealt with in his wok.
The first chapter deals not with just a prayer to an unknown and undefined god. He pays respects to God by
asserting the primacy of Sun in lives of all beings on Earth. A fact of life which stands the test of any
scientific enquiry. Just one verse.
All other verses are not on any imaginary gods. That is where Ayyan Valluvar makes his work appeal
an universal audience, which undoubtedly it is. The rest of first chapter defines knowledge essential
for a good life and ways of acquiring them . The meaning of life, what to expect out of it is also outlined.
The next three chapters of this section elaborates on this idea and prepares the audience
for what to come in later chapters.
Chapter 2 talks about rain and its importance in satiating hunger, the main and basic incurable disease
of all living beings.
Chapter 3 talks of people lived with honour and their strengths and weaknesses.
Chapter 4 defines virtue , the basic ingredient of a fruitful life and well-lived life.
The subsequent sections/chpters elaborates on these ideas in the context of various human environment, viz.,
individual/family/social/economical/political/personal et al.
